Allison Kilkenny: Unreported

Today In Your Corrupt Government

Posted in Barack Obama by allisonkilkenny on June 25, 2008

In case you didn’t know, the current administration is wildly partisan and corrupt. Still have doubts? Well, the Justice Department finally got around to filing a comprehensive report regarding all those suspicious firings of lawyers, and guess what? Partisan politics played a huge part in the dismissals. Knock me over with a fucking feather.

The Justice Department is being accused of a discriminatory ideological bias in the hiring of new lawyers over the last six years. In a new report, the Justice Department’s inspector general says top officials illegally rejected many qualified applications because they were deemed as “liberal.” The applications were part of a recruitment program tapping young law school graduates. The shift began under then-Attorney General John Ashcroft in 2002 and was said to accelerate under his successor, Alberto Gonzales. Emails show applications were vetted for “leftist commentary” or “buzz words” like environmental and social justice as grounds for rejections. Membership in groups such as the American Constitution Society, Greenpeace or the Poverty and Race Research Action Council were seen as drawbacks, while membership with the right-wing Federalist Society was seen positively. The inspector general’s preliminary findings are the first in an ongoing probe into the overall politicization of the Justice Department.

In other news, cowardly and corrupt Democrats continue to defend their decisions to allow the telecom companies retroactive immunity. Brace yourself…those very same Democrats receive lots of MONEY from the COMPANIES they DEFENDED.

A new analysis shows Democratic Congress members who changed their vote to support immunizing telecom companies in last week’s FISA bill have on average received thousands more from phone companies than those Democrats who have voted consistently against immunity. Ninety-four Democrats voted against immunity as recently as March but changed their votes to support it last week. According to MAPlight.org, these Democrats have received an average $8,000 in telecom contributions over the last three years. The 116 Democrats who remain opposed to immunity received on average nearly $5,000.

Showing a willingness to surrender his ideologies well beyond his years, Barack Obama backpedaled on previous promises to hold telecom companies accountable for their cooperation in the government eavesdropping on its own citizens. A Blogger named Digby explained what is happening best when he said this is Obama’s chance to prove he’s not a DFH (Dirty Fucking Hippy) to the more conservative half of the country. This decision is pretty much being universally panned across the internet.

Progressive blogs like Glenn Greenwald’s and Talking Points Memo are panning Obama with TPM sporting the headline: “Obama Backs Surveillance Cave.” Atrios awarded Obama the coveted “Wanker of the Day” award.

Now, Dodd and Feingold are planning a Hail Mary in the Senate where they hold to filibuster in hopes of changing the minds of their colleagues. At this point, it’s sort of like trying to stop a bulldozer with the determined thrust of a toothpick, but I wish the boys luck. They’ll certainly receive little help from weak centrists like Obama, who now claims he’s against the immunity but for the legislation, which still contains provisions for immunity. What the fuck does that mean?

Welcome to Washington. Please check your morality at the door.
