Today on Democracy Now, Gore Vidal discusses America’s amnesia and the trainwreck Bush administration.

The interview with Vidal was part of a larger 1968 theme when student and worker protests erupted in France and changed French society forever. Also in 1968, ABC News hired Vidal and William F. Buckley, Jr. as political analysts of the Republican and Democratic presidential conventions, predicting that television viewers would enjoy seeing two men of letters engage in on-air battle.

Oh yeah, they battled, all right.

Some of the “Debate” highlights include:

  • Vidal tells Buckley to “shut up a minute”
  • Buckley refers to the protesters as “pro-Nazi”
  • Vidal calls Buckley a “crypto-Nazi”
  • Buckley replies: “Now listen, you queer. Stop calling me a crypto-Nazi, or I’ll sock you in the goddamn face and you’ll stay plastered”

The video is behind the cut. Enjoy!
